It's been a busy few days, and I did get bullied nagged encouraged in Chatzy to produce a con report.  Basically I was told I could have no more mojitos until one was written.  So, short and sweet! *g*

But here's the proper one.

So, Wales Comic Con 2017.  This was the third one that I attended.  What always happens is that the organiser tweets some guest or other, [livejournal.com profile] fififolle and I tweet each other excitedly, we email [livejournal.com profile] deinonychus_1 (who does not do the Twitter thing) and all take about 2 seconds to decide we're going.  Last year they had Ben Mansfield and Black Leather Man (Oliver Walker.  He was in S1 Atlantis and is lovely) attending.  This year the cause of excessive amount of squeeing were three of the knights from Merlin.  (My Twitter, by the way, is here: https://twitter.com/clea2011 - it is only locked to keep local businesses and co-workers out, not to keep anyone who might be reading this out - I love to keep in touch with fan friends on Twitter)

Wales Comic Con, for anyone who hasn't been, is closer to the old fan-run conventions than most cons these days. It's well-attended, and the residents of Wrexham seem to really like it because it brings so many people into the town.

Here's the queue on the Saturday, snaking around one of the car parks.  This was the early bird queue.

I like the early bird queue.  I particularly like the bit where it starts moving, and you all get to parade past the people who didn't get early bird tickets who have to stand and watch us all go in.  There isn't really any other advantage to it that I can see, but that's sort of worth the getting up early.

Ah yes, the getting up early.  D1 and I arrived in Wrexham on the Friday evening and made our way to the Premier Inn, courtesy of a very nosey taxi driver who had very old-fashioned ideas about fans and fandom and really didn't understand that we were there to spend time with our friends - the guests were just a bonus.  After a yummy meal, we went to find Fifi and Miss Fifiling (who had bravely opted to come to the con with her mum's friends again.  You'd think once would be enough for her but apparently not!).  This is when Fifi announced that she had booked us in for breakfast before the alleged rush - AT SEVEN THIRTY IN THE MORNING!  SEVEN THIRTY!!  IN THE MORNING!  SEVEN THIRTY!  ON A SATURDAY!  ON HOLIDAY! Can someone remind me why I hang out with her?  AND she'd bought frozen mojitos for me.  Except they were still in her freezer back in darkest Cumbria.  Fifi was having a let's be mean to Clea evening, obviously.

Needless to say there was no rush in the restaurant at breakfast time.  I crawled in there at about 7:45, which was still earlier than necessary.  Anyway, we had the first of our huge enormous holiday breakfasts and headed off to the con.  We got there at about 9.30.  That allowed us to stand in the queue for half an hour.  So, completely worth the getting up early.  Totally.

We found [livejournal.com profile] lfb72 without any difficulty at all and then found [livejournal.com profile] narlth and [livejournal.com profile] elveatas and Sarah, who had in turn found a HUGE crowd of other Merlin fans.  There were a lot of Merlin fans at that con.  It was great to meet some of the folks from chatzy.  Everyone is of course lovely.  Some had travelled a very long way.  The weather was amazing, I was glad I'd brought some short-sleeved T-shirts with me.

There were two Buffy panels.  We went to the first one.  That was quite enough.  All I'll say about it is that the panels by James Marsters and Amber Benson last year were very entertaining.  And I'm sure the lady who played Anya is very interesting too but unfortunately she was barely able to get a word in.

Two of the cast from Class were at the con on the Saturday.  Fifi was very excited about this and unable to stop herself getting selfies and autographs and then dragging us all along to the talk.  Actually, the talk was very interesting and great fun.  I'm going to look up the show (which is a Dr Who spin off and on iPlayer) and have a watch because it sounds pretty good. The two actors were both Dr Who fans and happy to be part of it.  One of them got himself into trouble when they were filming next to the Dr Who set and he tweeted a pic of the weeping angels - big spoiler!

The interviewer was a real doctor.  He told us all this at least 5 times during the Class talk.  We had a bet going for the Merlin panel to see how long it took him to mention it again.  I bet 2 minutes.  LFB thought it would take 30 seconds.  LFB won...

There were two Merlin panels over the weekend.  The Saturday one has been posted online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHDUKgXAvZ8 and the Sunday one is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=depZCXIVYd4.  Looking at the timings on those, both talks were for the full 30 minutes.  I noticed a few other talks that had been recorded were only about 20 minutes.  The hall was too small given how many people wanted to attend the talk (about 30 people couldn't get into the first one) but it was good for those of us who did get in as the other hall is too dark for decent photos (see Buffy panel pic above for example) and you can sit a lot closer in this hall.  I have no photos from the Saturday talk because I managed to leave my phone in the boot of Fifi's car (cue small panic when I thought I'd lost it).

Anyway, here are some pictures from the Sunday talk.  Have some pictures:

All my con photos (except for those that have fan friends in them) can be found on my photobucket.  As certain folk who will remain nameless found out when they had a nose around in there last night, you can see all of my Photobucket folders. Honestly, it's not very exciting and it all links to LJ or A03 anyway!  It did result in a few more kudos and comments on Still Not King though.  So that was nice. :)

There were some 'interesting' questions about giant ducks and tiny horses, and about whether they shipped Gwaine/Gwen or Gwapple (which is Gwaine/Apple(!)), but both days were really good talks.  The interviewer didn't have to do anything because there were so many questions (so we were spared further mentions of how he was an actual doctor and therefore should be the next Dr Who) (and to be fair, he's actually very good as a con guest interviewer and we probably shouldn't have laughed).

Because there aren't any pictures of Mordred with the knights, LFB did an amazing piece of artwork on the Saturday night which you can see here (also her brilliant take on the giant duck/tiny horses question) and then got them to sign it the next day.  Here's Alex signing it for her.

He's always going to be blurry, he doesn't stop moving.  We were also wondering how he managed to play Mordred so straight-faced when he's so animated and hyper.  Here he is when he realised everyone was taking pictures and so he stood on his chair to give everyone a better shot.

I've seen a few guests get very snotty with fans for sneaking off 'free' snaps at these things so this was a refreshing attitude.  And look how miserable Mordred is on that poster behind him.  He also wrote a little note for keli and stellar_raven which was really sweet and caused quite a bit of squeeing.  I'm not sure I can ever have Mordred as a baddie ever again.
Oh no, wait, he killed Arthur and made poor Merlin walk the earth alone for over a thousand years...

What else did we do?  We ate too much.  We had chips and ice cream and chinese and all the bad things!
We kept running out of cash.  LFB and I found the photo stall and the last few Colin Morgan pictures from The Fall -
we had to agree to have one each because they were very pretty.
And all too soon it was all over and everyone was going home and that was very sad.

Except us, we spent the next few days touring Wales, and I'll put that in a separate post.  Eventually.

If that's not enough about the con, Fifi's report is here.

(Not sure what happened with that last section, word wrap seems to have failed so I've had to put in some line breaks)

Lol, yes, you definitely covered all the important parts of the weekend... the getting up early, the huge breakfasts, the queuing, the being *forced* to get up early, etc, etc... ;-)

The Merlin boys were sweet, though, especially Alex. He's too sweet and excitable to play such an evil bad guy.

I am glad so much attention was paid to how early you had to get up... I would have done the same.
P.S. Get in chat, I need someone to make me write

It's offensive to expect people like us to get up that early, right? Fifi was trying to make out there was something wrong with me because I'm a night owl.

I'm in there. We're not doing much work though!

And the squeeing hasn't really let up yet. I just cannot get over it! I have to thank you and fif and Alex again!

I'm glad y'all were able to go and have such a great time!
